At Draft2Digital, it’s our mission to help authors become more successful. We strive to accomplish this mission by providing free educational resources, innovative publishing and distribution tools, free promotional opportunities, and efficient management tools so you can spend less time tinkering and more time writing. One of our most popular, time-saving management tools is D2D Payment Splitting.

As you might expect, the tool allows authors and contributors to collaborate on projects without having to worry about managing the royalties. Collaborative projects, such as co-authorship on books and series, box sets and anthologies are an excellent way for authors to increase their productivity and expand promotional reach for everyone involved.

But if you’ve ever tried to manually divvy up royalties with fellow collaborators after a book’s been published and earnings started rolling in, you know it can be a hassle, especially if terms haven’t been agreed upon by everyone ahead of time. D2D Payment Splitting helps eliminate the hassle by assisting collaborators with the tax interview (required for new D2D account holders) and making it a cinch to assign royalty percentage splits for all participants.

Here’s how D2D Payment Splitting Works

Payment splitting starts with an Organizer, who could be you or one of your fellow collaborators/copyright holders who has agreed to be the Organizer. The Organizer determines the percentage of the royalty split and the terms of agreement for each collaborator.

To start a new project, or edit an existing one, go to My Books, navigate to the book you want to add paid collaborators to, and click the “Add Paid Collaborator” button. You’ll find the button on Step 1: Details, below the Book Description box. Once you add your collaborator’s email address, we’ll send a confirmation request to your payee. Note that each payee must have their own D2D account with verified tax information. Once your payee accepts your collaboration request, we’ll automatically handle the royalty splits.

Once a collaborator has been successfully added, on your My Books dashboard you’ll see an orange tab on the book you’ve assigned collaborators to that clearly highlights “Split Payments.” Now when you click into Step 1: Details for the book you’ll be able to see the number of paid collaborators you have confirmed for this specific title.

That’s all there is to it! For a step-by-step walk through of D2D Payment Splitting, we encourage you to check out this short tutorial on our YouTube channel.
